Started fairly well and showed promise (back in 2006-2007). But over 10 years later… - …it is still slow. - …notably lacking in features. - …stores imported files in a DB3 database (rather than in the original format [in the Library > Application Support > RouteBuddy…] (which means, losing the originals may mean losing the files indefinitely, especially once RouteBuddy support is discontinued). -…the Satellite View (or even Map View) magnification is more limited than, say, Google Map's -…and yet the app loads considerably slower than does Google Maps. -…the waypoints properties don't shows the creation date and other metadata: only metadata manually assigned to the file. - …no shortcuts to delve into entry properties (i.e., 'Command-I") - it's right-click -only. -…he license isn't particularly affordable. -…I can't conceive a difference between the version 1.2.1 I bought back in early April 2007 - and the version 4.2.1 I paid for in years later. -…had to re-purchase maps, as the old ones were no longer supported. -…the address / lat. & long. search / look-up property is perfectly useless. It certainly is no Google Maps. -…RouteBuddy Atlas is fairly useless: has a poor interface, very limited set of features, etc. …I could go on and on, but I must admit that the customer support reacted quickly when I complained about the speed and crashes. With all that said, I do believe the app still holds promise (not at the current rate of progress!), although I imagine that since most people rely on Apple / Google Maps instead (and would hardly need RouteBuddy), there, it appears, is no incentive for the developer to continue developing the app. That is a shame - both because of private, nostalgic value (I bought the version 1.x to route My first serious bicycle tour I embarked on in 2007 that I miss sorely, in the most eventful, inspiring and memorable year of My life to date), as well because if polished properly and enriched with features, the app would really shine. Also, its interface was quite appealing at the time of purchase. Unfortunately, functionality is lacking even now.

It actually loads my Motion GPS files but seems to have no Australian Maps and even if they would need to be purchased separately so not useful for me at all

Astonishingly slow rendering a map. On an 8 core power mac with plenty of free memory it's quicker to go to google maps via a slow internet connection and get the map than it is for Route Buddy to draw it from the internal hard disk. And zoom in a notch? Yup, we wait all over again. Makes no difference if I use Open GL or software rendering. That said, version 3 seems only slightly slower than version 2, which also was horrible. Entering an address is hit or miss -- generally miss. Importing and displaying tracks works very well. I like the company and love they are filling a niche. The product continues to disappoint. I will still support the effort and hope they get it right one day.

Garmin provides its users with free software that does this but it only works with Garmin GPS units.
